The Experiment (2010)

Short review: Selected to participate in a two-week research project, a group of men agree to play inmates and guards in a simulation of life within a state prison. But as the 26 volunteers slip deeper into their roles, power corrupts, fears escalate and the experiment spins horribly out of control. Despite its talented cast that includes two Oscar winners and an intriguing premise, "The Experiment" can be considered as... well, a failed experiment. "The Experiment" is undoubtedly a disturbing film, because it dares to show the true violent power-thirsty nature of human beings, that is so close to reality. Unfortunately everything seems very contrived, because no one in real life will act the way the characters act in this film, unless they're mentally ill. The acting is the only strong point of this movie. Adrian Brody delivers very good performance as Travis - the gritty and wilful prisoner, but it's Forest Whitaker who steals the show as Barris - a quietly insane violence-lover. He's believable and at times terrifying. The rest of the cast is just okay. The low-budget is pretty visible, since the film has this cheap made-for-TV-like visuals. All in all, "The Experiment" has the potential to be a very good movie, but unfortunately, it never delivers.
